Shares of Grayscale Bitcoin Trust experience a significant rise since January

2 min

Grayscale Bitcoin Trust’s (GBTC.P) stock value experienced a 2.4% surge on Monday, coinciding with the fund’s first influx of capital since the start of the year. This development is a significant turning point for GBTC, which has faced $17.46 billion in capital withdrawals since its transition from a trust to a publicly traded ETF in January, attributed to its comparatively higher fees.

The outflow also reflects the recent spate of bankruptcies within the cryptocurrency sector, with failing companies withdrawing investments to settle debts. Investment firm Farside Investors reported a $63 million inflow into GBTC on Friday. The fund’s current asset management stands at $18.08 billion.

GBTC’s status as the leading spot bitcoin ETF in terms of AUM is being challenged by BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT.O), which boasts an AUM of $16.91 billion.

In March, Grayscale announced plans to seek SEC approval to transfer some of GBTC’s holdings into a new Bitcoin Mini Trust with lower fees, though the fee structure is still under consideration. Spot bitcoin ETFs, recently sanctioned by the SEC after years of hesitation, offer investors the opportunity to invest in bitcoin without direct ownership of the digital asset.
